It’s on this basis that fans of silk pillowcases say they make their hair smoother and their skin clearer. “There’s a reason the saying is ‘smooth as silk.’” A cotton pillow causes more friction than a silk pillowcase – so there’s potentially less breakage,” she says. “The smoother the fabric, the less friction it causes on your hair. The science makes sense, says Preethi Gopinath, founding director of the MFA textiles programme at Parsons School of Design. “I use silk pillowcases myself, and they do feel lovely – and I get lots of compliments on my skin! But I doubt that’s from a pillowcase alone.” Do silk pillowcases work? “Silk is a continuous filament, which is why it feels so soft and smooth, whereas cotton is shorter filaments spun together,” explains Caterina Radvan, a lecturer in textile design at the University of Brighton. ![]() And, if nothing else, silk feels softer and more luxurious than any other material used for pillowcases or bedding sets.
